I didn't have the luxury of time or patience to line up outside a store so waited for lunch time to roll around and made my purchase online (my preferred shopping medium).
About a month ago I wrote a Wear It Five Ways post on different ways to wear a lace dress and received a few requests to show how I turned the dress into a top.

One item I eagerly unpacked earlier this month from my fall/winter wardrobe was this J. Crew leopard skirt. Few things say "fall" as well as a leopard item.
Print-mixing is still unfamiliar territory to me so I continue to approach it with reservation and utilize it infrequently. However, I was surprised by how harmoniously polka dot and leopard go together.
Do you look forward to leopard-print season?

(Outfit)
White Dress + Seersucker Blazer (And a Comparison of the J. Crew Director Dress and H&M Sheath Dress)
I went a little overboard with short sleeve sheath dresses last month and bought more than enough to last me at least one more summer. One of my favorite styles is the v-neck sheath with cap sleeves. I especially loved the J. Crew Director Dress (also in super 120) and its H&M doppelganger. The two dresses are nearly identical in design (the H&M version is cut slimmer and longer with a deeper V in the neckline).

I am currently debating taking up the length of the white dress by an inch. As is I think the dress makes me look a little stumpier than I would like. It did satisfy my craving for a sleeved white sheath so I definitely consider it a good purchase.

Happy Friday!
As a bona fide scallop fiend, I couldn't resist the temptation of getting the J. Crew Scallop Sateen Skirt in both colors (shadow - or navy - and "grape" - as shown here) when I spotted them in stores a few weeks ago (I know...so much for not buying duplicates! I hang my head in shame). These skirts have presented new challenges as the scallop details are at the waist, an interesting departure from the run of the mill skirt with scalloped hems.
I've been a little more mindful of a clothing item's perceived versatility when shopping but honestly, these skirts are not the most versatile solid-colored mini's that one can find in today's heavily deluged clothing market. Regardless, I still feel giddy when I wear them and that should be factored into its worth.
A bonus that comes with skirts that have interesting details at the waist? You don't need to belt it. It's as if even if your blouse is not tucked in perfectly, the scallop detail is drawing all of the attention to it and any unevenness at the junction where the skirt and the top meet is overlooked.
So, I urge you to give this skirt a try next time you cross paths with it in a J. Crew store. I would love to hear your thoughts!

Scalding temperature is making getting dressed on the weekends a chore. Don't get me wrong, I am a summer baby so I'll always have a special place in my heart for warm summer days but this heat is borderline intolerable. My summer weekend uniform boils down to three basic looks: dress in a breathable fabric, shorts with silk tops, and maxi dresses or skirts.
My favorite of the three, at the moment, is maxi dresses and skirts. The others have been tried-and-true summer staples but I can't get enough of maxi-length dresses and skirts right now.

Where do I begin with high-low skirts? Or, as J likes to call them, mullet skirts. I was at first ambivalent about them but as soon as I tried one on, it was instant infatuation. The skirt catches the wind in such a romantic way and I can't help but become a high-low skirt convert.
The skirt is easy enough to pair but I thought I would brainstorm a few ideas here anyway.
Some beginner styling tips for the high-low skirt: I think this skirt can be worn as a fall piece (add a fitted leather jacket and you are ready to go) but I decided to focus on how it can be worn comfortably for the summer. If your high-low skirt is a solid color, like mine, you can try pairing it with a fun floral print (top left), a military-inspired blouse (top right), or a lace top (bottom right). I would say it's pretty difficult to go wrong in these simple pairings - the skirt itself is interesting enough so there's no need to style it with more complicated designs.
To get more use out of this skirt, you can consider wearing it as a top (top middle) with some fitted capri pants and a piece of statement jewelry. Or, you can take advantage of the longer outer layer and tie it around your neck and wear this skirt as a dress (bottom middle).
Of course, you always have the option of wearing a high-low skirt with the tank top of your choice (solid colors, busy prints, fitted, loose, whatever catches your fancy). I do want to add that since this skirt is flowy, you might want to avoid a pairing mate that is too blousy. There is always an off-chance that that pairing would come across as being too shapeless and overwhelming.
And an outfit that I wore out a few weeks ago. I consider myself a simple dresser so I love pieces that fit well within my existing wardrobe.

My favorite DIY/style blogger SewPetiteGal is the host of this month's Petite Fashion Challenge and here's the challenge she posed:
The Challenge: Candy Colorized

The Challenge: Candy Colorized
Take a bowl full
of colorful candies (M&Ms, Jolly Ranchers, jelly beans, etc.), close
your eyes, and draw 2-3 pieces. Now use those colors (+ a neutral of
your choosing) to form the basis for your ensemble.
So...let me explain why there are no red peanut M&M's in the mix. In between trying to find my camera and losing my memory card, I picked out all the red one's and ate them. Call it cheating or coincidence, I only had the following colors to choose from.

So...I ended up with two colors. I can work with blue and green. I had to resist the urge to colorblock the heck out of these two colors but remembered that I had worn that outfit before so I decided to interpret the challenge a little differently. I ended up wearing blue and green and the shades in between.
As for my "neutral" color - I picked gold and kept it subtle. The bag hardware, the necklace, and the hints of gold in the bracelet give the outfit a little sparkle.
I think the end result's not too shabby. It's a smoother color transition and while not as eye-catching as color-blocking, I think it's pretty interesting to look at.

And, before you run off to read the other entries for this PFC, I want to leave you all with some pictures of yummy food. What's summer without burgers and hot dogs?! (ok, I got really hungry while editing these pictures and didn't think it was fair that I had to be the only hungry person after dinner...so there!)

You can read the other entries for this month's challenge at SewPetiteGal's blog.
p.s. SPG's gorgeous peplum skirt (available in five prints) is now available through her etsy store. Thank you Jean for the tip!
It's been ages since I last wore this Hello Kitty tie neck blouse. When I bought this blouse, I thought it would receive a lot of wear simply because it combined two of my favorite things: tie neck blouses and Hello Kitty.
Unfortunately, these two opposing forces worked against the shirt in practice. I didn't want to wear it to work because I felt too juvenile and inappropriate wearing Hello Kitty to the office. Yet the style and color of the blouse was hard to integrate into weekend wear.
Have you ever bought something that sounds amazing in theory that didn't end up being a closet darling?

J and I went to see the Dictator last weekend. We are usually the
takeout and HIMYM rerun crowd but couldn't resist SBC's latest work. We
love (and cite endlessly lines from) Borat and crass humor so the
Dictator is very much our cup of tea. If you enjoyed Borat but found Bruno to have crossed the line (with excessive nudity), I think you'll like the Dictator.
As funny as over-the-top theatrics and toilet humor may appear to us - those of us who share our sense of humor with 10-year-old boys - real-life dictators are not funny at all. There were moments in the movie when I would first laugh out loud and then fall into an abrupt silence. After all, there is nothing funny about infanticide, rape, or nuclear proliferation in unstable regimes.
I enjoyed the dictator as a work of fiction and realize that the movie pokes fun at both dictatorships and democracy - no political system is perfect. I do, however, want to end this post with a Foreign Policy article from 2010 that lists some of the most ruthless dictators, some of whom have already been ousted from power since then. For better or worse, disgruntled people and the recent economic turmoil are fueling the fire that's overthrowing dictatorships.
Have a terrific long weekend, everyone!
